Hello again! Didn't intend to wait this long to update my blog, but here it is mid- April.
Let's back up a little to Monday, March 3rd. Hubby came home from work, I was heating up leftover chili from Saturday. He had a few peanuts and a few plain potato chips while waiting. We ate and I fixed a recipe I got from Shirl, apples (I used granny smith) wrapped in crescent rolls with brown sugar and cinnamon. He ate a couple with a glass of milk. Let me step aside here to say, he has had a cough for awhile, he is a former smoker but never had a 'smokers cough' when he smoked. Our doctor had taking a chest x-ray and all was fine.
Anyway, one night I gave him a Benadryl before he went to bed and it seemed to help the cough. So on this night, the 3rd, he had been coughing some so I gave him a tablespoon of children's Benadryl ((pharmacy brand - Rylie (dog) was itching once and I bought it for her)) to see if it helped because I was out of regular Benadryl. Shortly after, his head started itching, then his hands. He went to the bathroom and said he felt like he was going to pass out. He started to the bedroom but lay down on the living room floor, again feeling like he was going to pass out. He didn't lie there long and made it to the bed, I took his blood pressure and it was 90/58, also took his blood sugar which was low considering he had not long ago eaten. He went to the bathroom again and when he came back his face was covered in sweat. He started having trouble breathing as well as feelings of passing out. I was worried it would cause him to have another heart attack on top of everything else.
Thankfully he didn't protest about calling 911. His upper body and arms were red, his face and hands were swelled. Later I found out he had hives on his upper thighs. The local fire department sent 2 guys to check him out and give him oxygen while we waited for the ambulance. This was also one of the days we had an ice storm. They got him in the ambulance and while they were trying to get an IV in his arm one of the fire dept guys helped me clear my windshield of ice so I could follow the ambulance. They weren't able to get the IV in but they gave him Benadryl and Albuterol in the ambulance. After he got to the hospital they gave him a breathing treatment among other things. Took a chest x-ray too. He got to the hospital around 9:20 pm and he was able to leave about 12:30 am. It all happened so fast but thankfully he was okay.
We have no idea what caused it, he has eaten all those things many
times. He eats apples, but not granny smith, although I am sure he has
eaten them in cooked items like apple pie and such. The other thing was
the children's Benadryl, he's taken Benadryl before, so maybe something
else that was in it?
He stayed home from work that Tuesday and was feeling okay. Went to work on Wednesday but came home around 3 pm with chills and fever. Went to the doctor's on Thurs, wasn't flu, I guess just a bug. He stayed home the rest of the week, feeling better on Saturday, got out of the bed most of the day. He has what sounds like a cold since then, but he has an appointment with an Allergist today. Hopefully they can figure out what caused it. I also hope whatever they do helps with the cough he has. If it is not allergy related then he needs to see an ear, nose and throat doctor.
Take care,
Sheila
Could it be an allergy to the peanuts? Someone else here recently told of an unexpected allergy to peanuts and I remember it sounded like a scary situation. Hope they get to the bottom of it. Nice to see you do a post again but not under the circumstance.

That would be scary.. Kind of like it was when I could not get words out even with Joe screaming at me. Hope they can figure out what his problem is. I went outside for awhile today but 69 is a little cool with no sleeves on but I sure enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad your hubby is okay! That had to be scary!
